BOTSWANA

PRISTINE AND EXCLUSIVE

Botswana is a love story for any wildlife enthusiast. It is home to about a third of the world's elephants and more than 400 bird species.

Years ago, the Botswana governemnt made a strategic decision to develop a tourism model based on high value and low ecological footprint. It means that most of the lodges are small and exclusive and the price is higher than in many other countries. This model allows for the preservation of pristine wilderness and silence.

One of the most sought-after areas in Botswana is the Okavango Delta.

This fascinating and delicate ecosystem palys host to a myriad of game, birds and plant life. It is the largest untouched inland delta in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

The Okavango is situated on a collapsed piece of the earth's crust, which forms an extension of the Great African Rift Valley.

LOCAL GUIDES

Many of the local guides in Botswana have grown up in a village where animals, including the Big 5, roam freely. Their knowledge and understanding of the area and its inhabitants will leave you with a deeper appreciation of the delicate complexity, the resourcefulness and the wonder of the natural world.

MORE ABOUT BOTSWANA

Many of the islands in the delta are created by termites. Given time, termite mounds can become high enough to avoid being flooded and provide a ground for trees to grow. Transpiration by the trees causes chemical changes in the ground water, leading to the precipitation of calcium carbonate, which causes islands to grow.

Because they create such islands, termites are one of the two most important faunal species of the Delta ecosystem. The other is the Hippopotamus. Many of the channels are created and blockages are often cleared by hippos traversing the waterways of the delta.
